1.  "He will keep you safe.  But to Israel and Judah  he will be a stone that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall.  And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare."

2.  "Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him.  But for those who reject him, "The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone." And, "He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they do not obey God's word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them."

3.  "Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever.  The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.  The people who walk in darkness will see a great light.  For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine."

4.  "When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee.  He went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.  This fulfilled what God has said through the prophet Isaiah: "In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali, beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River, in Galilee where so many Gentiles live, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.  And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined."

5.  "In that day the heir to David's throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world.  The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place."

6.  "That was the reason so many went out to meet him - because they had heard about his miraculous sign.  Then the Pharisees said to each other, "There's nothing we can do.  Look, everyone has gone after him!" Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee.  They said, "Sir, we want to meet Jesus."

7.  "And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf.  The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will sing for joy! Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the wasteland."

8.  "John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing.  So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the Messiah we've been expecting , or should we keep looking for someone else?" Jesus told them, "Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen - the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.  And tell him, 'God blesses those who do not turn away because of me.' "

9.  "Listen! It's the voice of someone shouting, "Clear the way through the wilderness for the LORD! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God! Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills.  Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places."

10.  "John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: "I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, 'Clear the way for the LORD'S coming!' "
