Matthew 4:1-11:

"Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' "
Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.  For it is written:
'He shall give His angels charge over you,'
and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' "
Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.' "
Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."
Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.' "
Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him."

Matthew 3:

"In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching.  His message was, "Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near." The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, "He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the LORD'S coming! Clear the road for him!'
"John's clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist.  For food he ate locusts and wild honey.  People from Jerusalem and from all of Judea and all over the Jordan Valley went out to see and hear John.  And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.
But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them.  "You brood of snakes!" he exclaimed.  "Who warned you to flee God's coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.  Don't just say to each other, 'We're safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.' That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.  Even now the ax of God's judgment is poised, ready to server the roots of the trees.  Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.
"I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God.  But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am - so much greater that I'm not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals.  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.  He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork.  Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire."
Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John.  But John tried to talk him out of it.  "I am the one who needs to be baptized by you," he said, "so why are you coming to me?"
But Jesus said, "It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires." So John agreed to baptize him.
After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.  And a voice from heaven said, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy."

Exodus 3:

"One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian.  He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God.  There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush.  Moses stared in amazement.  Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn't burn up.  "This is amazing," Moses said to himself.  "Why isn't that bush burning up? I must go and see it.
When the LORD saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, "Moses! Moses!"
"Here I am!" Moses replied.
"Do not come any closer," the LORD warned.  "Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.  I am the God of your father - the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.  When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.
Then the LORD told him, "I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt.  I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers.  Yes, I am aware of their suffering.  So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land.  It is a land flowing with milk and honey - the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites now live.  Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them.  Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh.  You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt."
But Moses protested to God, "Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Whom am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?"
God answered, "I will be with you.  And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain."
But Moses protested, "If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, 'The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' they will ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what should I tell them?"
God replied to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM.  Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you." God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors - the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob - has sent me to you.

This is my eternal name,
my name to remember for all generations.

"Now go and call together all the elders of Israel.  Tell them, 'Yahweh the God of your ancestors - the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob - has appeared to me.  He told me, "I have been watching closely, and I see how the Egyptians are treating you.  I have promised to rescue you from your oppression in Egypt.  I will lead you to a land flowing with milk and honey - the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites now live."
The elders of Israel will accept your message.  Then you and the elders must go to the king of Egypt and tell him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us.  So please let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the LORD, our God.'
But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand forces him.  So I will raise my hand and strike the Egyptians, performing all kinds of miracles among them.  Then at last he will let you go.  And I will cause the Egyptians to look favorably on you.  They will give you gifts when you go so you will not leave empty-handed.  Every Israelite woman will ask for articles of silver and gold and fine clothing from her Egyptian neighbors and from the foreign women in their houses.  You will dress your sons and daughters with these, stripping the Egyptians of their wealth."

Acts 9:1-19:

"Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord's followers.  So he went to the high priest.  He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there.  He wanted to bring them-both men and women-back to Jerusalem in chains.
As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him.  He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?"
"Who are you, lord?" Saul asked.
Ad the voice replied, "I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city; and you will be told what you must do."
The men with Saul stood speechless, for they heard a sound of someone's voice but saw no one! Saul picked himself up off the ground, but when he opened his eyes his was blind.  So his companions led him by the hand to Damascus.  He remained there blind for three days and did not eat or drink.
Now there was a believer in Damascus named Ananias.  The Lord spoke to him in a vision, calling, "Ananias!"
"Yes, Lord!" he replied.
The Lord said, "Go over to Straight Street, to the house of Judas.  When you get there, ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul.  He is praying to me right now.  I have shown him a vision of a man named Ananias coming and laying hands on him so he can see again."
"But Lord," exclaimed Ananias, "I've heard many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem.  And he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon your name."
But the Lord said, "Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to the kings, as well as to the people of Israel.  And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name's sake."
So Ananias went and found Saul.  He laid his hands on him and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.  Instantly something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he regained his sight.  Then he got up and was baptized.  Afterward he ate some food and regained his strength."
